Under the changing environment of international political economy after the coldwar, regional cooperation among neighboring nations is requisite for stabilizing security and stifling competition. Prior yet ongoing regional cooperations such as EU and NAFTA have exhibited significant accomplishments, discussions on stimulating East Asian regional cooperation have been burgeoning, while it would take time to build a consensus on the methods.
One special feature in East Asian regionalism is on establishing mainly an economic community, e.g. ASEAN+3. Recent discourse on East Asian regionalism after the Asian financial crisis has been seeking alternatives against previous policy regime. Institutionalization of East Asian regionalism is, thus, to set up specific policy requirements of regional economic integration. To construct East Asian community, it needs coordination with other regions, especially the western world. Through open regionalism which embraces other regions, the possibility of East Asian community will be enhanced.
