Since his childhood Dr Nagai thought the public prejudice of kegare or impurity around him to be a problem. Then he thought the ways to wipe it out are, that so-called impure people should live with dignity, and that modern science should develop. He found that the people living in the first way are Urakami Catholic. Because he hated the opinion that they are impure, he declared that the massacred believers were perfectly pure, and he thoroughly idealized their unnatural death on his drawings and tanka or Japanese short verses, although the actual last moments of the victims were extremely miserable with the stench of death in big fires.
For this reason, this essay concludes that Dr Nagai was a man who continued fighting, throughout his life, against the unfair public prejudice of impurity.
