The Comedy of Errors has been undervalued because of some defects such as loose plot, casual accidents, and poor characterization etc, but it includes many comic elements which will be fully developed in Shakespeare's mature comedies. Even though The Comedy of Errors is regarded as a mere farce, we can find many comic elements such as laughter, the difference between appearance and reality, change of place and some kind of transformation in it.
In this paper, I pointed out that the main cause of comic movement is the confusion which derives from the twin brothers and servants. The confusion occurs when the characters do not recognize the difference between appearance and reality. The resemblance between appearance and reality makes the comic action go foreword and makes the main characters fall in deep confusion. But the confusion makes the audience laugh very happily and . also makes each character seek his own true identity after a long transitional period. At the end of the play, each can find his true identity and enjoy meeting all the family members.
I tried to analyze the main actions of the characters in The Comedy of Errors by applying the rite of passage of anthropology. The Period of Separation, transition and incorporation can be traced through the actions of the main characters.
Egeon separates from his wife and son on the way home from abroad. After spending 18 years at his home, Antipholus of Syracuse arrives at Ephesus to seek his twin brother. But Antipholus of Syracuse begins to face many strange incidents. The twin brothers and servants face so many incidents that they really go through strange experiences. At Ephesus main characters experience the transitional period which makes them seek their true identity. This means that the main characters are mature enough to recognize the difference between appearance and reality after a long period of confusion and misunderstanding. All the main characters enjoy the happy reunion of the whole family which corresponds to the incorporation stage in the view of anthropology.
