The purpose of this paper is to study Cordelia's subversive discourse from a feministic point of view. In a patriarchal society powerful and authoritative discourse is attributed only to men. Women are usually regarded as secondary, no n - substantial beings, and outsiders, so women are required to be quiet and obedient to men. In such circumstances Cordelia shows her initial identity by maintaining her silence in the presence of the patriarchally oriented male.
The relationship between King Lear and his daughters can be explained as that of the ruler and the ruled. King Lear exerts his absolute patriarchal power over his daughters. He intends to divide his kingdom to the degree of their expression of affection toward him in a 'love contest'. Goneril and Regan's hyperbolic speech have left no room for Cordelia who is to follow them. Lear confuses language with action. The tragic irony of the play lies in the fact that Lear is blind to the realities of power and love. Cordelia doesn't accept the exchanging of love for power but values a mutual interchange of love which is founded upon equality. Cordelia's silence turns out to be the voice of purified a woman.
Rejecting his 'love contest' even though she has been his favorite, Cordelia is banished by her father. He denies all blood relationship with her, and Cordelia loses her wealth and becomes 'worthless', but she never loses her dignity. Cordelia has a giving and selfless love. Eventually she is reunited with her father who has been turned inside out by physical and mental suffering. She returns to help his father from France. Through Cordelia's true love King Lear finally shows his acceptance of the opposite gender.
She is the new ideal woman who denies the traditional feminine image and keeps her diginity as a true human being. She tells us that women have the same human diginity and rights as men do. Rejecting the traditional critical attitude toward this tragedy, this paper focuses on the feminine issues. Even though Cordelia was marginal in her world and her subversive discouse brought about unjust violent oppression on the part of men which resulted in death, she was not a victim of the patriarchal society but a victor - because she could finally succeed in bringing change and self - acknowledgement from the most important man in her society, King Lear.
