This paper gives an account of how Cordella’s story presented in the source play is reshaped in the First Quarto and the First Folio editions of King Lear. These three versions bear on the form of a cross-textual dialogue with each other. The textual variation in them proves the notion that Shakespeare rewrote the source’s characters in his original composition, and revised it in the process of the rehearsal and stage production: The True Chronicle History of King Leir and his three daughters, Gonorill, Ragan and Cordella published in 1605 was a dramatic source for M. William Shak-speare: HIS True Cronicle Historie of the life and death of King LEAR and his three Daughters appeared in a quarto of 1608; this Quarto text was revised and printed in the First Folio of 1623 entitled The Tragedy of King Lear.
The three versions differ in the dramatization of the French invasion of Britain, and Cordella/Cordelia’s appearance as the Queen of France: in the source play the King of France helps Cordella to end Gonorill and Ragan’s tyranny and restore Leir to the throne; in the Quarto he brings an army to Britain but soon departs for France in the face of some urgent state matter, thereby pointing Cordelia at the head of the French army; in the Folio there is no mention of him, but Cordelia asserts that she is leading a French army in order to rescue her father rather than aspire to political power. Cordella/Cordelia’s association with a French invasion is most explicit in the source, less in the Quarto and least in the Folio. The main difference derives from the genre addressed in each version’s title: the history in the 1605 source and the 1608 Quarto, and the tragedy in the 1623 Folio. This paper concludes that their portrayals of Cordella/Cordelia as a foreigner correspond to the shift from a character of the history to the tragedy.
