Henry V celebrates the triumph of Henry V representing Greenblatt's paradigm of subversion and containment. Henry succeeds in cosolidating of the dominant power in various aspects of the subversions. And the theme of the play is the establishment of kingship by containing subversion and by warring against France. The strategy of consolidation is exerted most effectively in Henry's claim to the throne of France, the execution of traitors, and the threats leveled against the civilians of Hartleur.
However, Henry V dramatizes the gap between expectations and actuality. With its ambivalent representation, the play shows contradictory and conflictive process from Henry's success. Henry V is a juggler as well as the victorious ruler, whose shrewd accountancy is recognizable in the management of subversiveness and manipulation of people.
In the concluding scene Henry's failure to close the gap is left to the final chorus. And the romance world of Henry's glorification is overshadowed by the bloody future. The fleeting nature of his own achievement is underscored by a glance at the disastrous of his son, Henry VI, who lost everything his father had gained.
So Henry's success proves to be a temporary adventure and only an episode in English history in the broader perspective. And the historical play Henry V can be read either as a romantic celebration or as an ironic satire.
