From the traditional discourse of tragedy which has been based on Aristotle's Poetics and medieval view of humanity, we can find the conservative view of the world. It can be described that conservative ideology values organic order of the universe, morality, elitism, Christian humanism, and patriarchal dominance. According to the traditional discourse of tragedy, tragedies usually teach the audience the myth of morality and plant the absolute value of the established order in the audience's mind. If Greek tragedy focuses on human weakness dominated by the external force like gods or fate, it informs the audience of the order of fate we cannot avoid. The tragic discourse of Christian world emphasizing the morality and justice centered on God is ethical and deterministic oppressing the audience's desire through pity and fear. Furthermore, the modem romantic discourse of tragedy which focuses on the heroic quality of the protagonist seems to emphasize the liberal aspects of tragedy. However, The perspective that admires the hero's courage to accept suffering and death caused by his own faults is rather conservative.
If so, can we say that Shakespeare's tragedy can be applied to such a conservative ideology? We can see the moral, hierarchical, and patriarchal order dominate Shakespeare's tragic world. In fact, the division between good and evil is apparent in Shakespeare's tragic world, and the evil force is finally punished. Therefore, it seems certain that Shakespeare's tragedies considerably contribute to creating the myth of conservative ideology. Even though the protagonists' misfortune and destruction arouse pity and fear, it confirms the authority of ruling order. Especially Macbeth is outstanding to represent the conservatism. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth's cruel murder of enemies was greatly praised. But when he violates the hierarchical and moral order of the society by murdering Duncan, he becomes the object of curse and hate. Also, Lady Macbeth who confuses the patriarchal order by domineering over her husband and pushing him to violate the moral order is punished in the end. The suffering and death of the sinful couple apparently lead the audience to feel the fear of subverting established order, which clearly defends the conservative value.
