The purpose of this study is to extend Lemke’s multiple hierarchy model of power transition theory by introducing two different dimensions of status quo evaluations of regional contenders. Since a state’s status quo evaluations are involved at two different levels-the regional and the global-and a challenger’s dissatisfaction is one of the important conditions for the onset of war, the study of regional war, war between regional contenders in particular, should take into consideration both status quo evaluations of states. We argue that not only the regional status quo evaluation but also the global status quo evaluation affects the probability of a regional war between a regional challenger and a dominant state. We also claim that when the two states’status quo evaluations are in opposite directions, they are much more likely to go to war because the change of a regional status quo can affect the global status quo and, thus, regional conflict contending over the regional status quo is more likely to invite the intervention of global contenders. The results of a statistical analysis support our hypothesis.
