This study inspected recognition on the ‘Religious society’ of the press by period during the Great Han Empire. Before 1904, through the recognition on the case of ‘Kyoan(敎案)’ which Catholics mainly involved, positions of the press may be examined. In those days, the press had sense of crisis in that corruption of the local administration may cause a disturbance of the locals and provide a reason of intervention of the foreign power, and such sense of crisis was expressed through the recognition on ‘Kyoan’. After 1904, ‘groups’ appeared claiming to stand for ‘Society’ and the press began to mention the necessity of ‘Society’. And then, the press took notice of the availability of ‘Society’ from the theoretical viewpoint of ‘civilization’ and ‘patriotism’.
In case of Catholicism and Protestantism, in those days, the press took notice of the phenomenon of entering a faith for political reason. And In case of the Cheondo Religion(天道敎), since homecoming of Son Byeong-Hi(孫秉熙) in 1906, the relation with Ilchinhoe(一進會) was also main concern. The press had suspicion about the relation between Son Byeong-Hi and Ilchinhoe, and tried to separate both completely after driving out Ilchinhoe by the Cheondo Religion. However, in reality, ‘making trouble’ and ‘dependence on the foreign power’ were questioned, and the press demanded ‘nationalism’ to the ‘religious society’. Demands of nationalism by the press came to be more intense starting from 1908.
