This is to study and compare the effect of Korea's outward direct investment (OFDI) to that of inward foreign direct investment (IFDI) on Korea's export and import in the manufacturing sector. In empirical result, the overall effect of OFDI on Korea's export is insignificant. However, the effect in the light industry is negative on Korea's export, while it is insignificant in the heavy industry, except in the electronic industry which shows negative effect. The effect of OFDI on the import is positive. On the other hand, the effect of Home country's GDP growth on the export is positive, and that on the import is negative.
The overall effect of IFDI is positive on the export. However these effects of detailed industries are not that clear. However, its import effect is positive in textile and petrochemical industry. By country, the OFDI into advanced countries such as U.S., Japan etc. lowers export, while that into Germany and China raises their exports. ODFI's import effect is positive in Germany and China, while that on U.S, Japan and England are insignificant. FDI raises Korea's export in most cases. It lowers the import in case of U.S., Germany and England and raises in China.
In conclusion, the effects of OFDI and IFDI could not be uniformly explained. Those effects depend on the extent of localization in investing and investment-inducing country, macroeconomic situation of investment-inducing country, and the feature of industry specialization(vertical or horizontal) in production and sales.
