Under the influence of Paul's opposers, the Philippians could have “been neither like-minded, have had the same love, have been one in spirit and purpose, nor have considered others better than themselves in humility"(Phil. 2:2-3). The self-praises among the members caused disunion in the Church.
In order to encourage the Philippians to reunite, Paul used two concepts in his letter: kenosis(emptiness) and mimesis(imitation). While the former is the concept that Paul quoted from the traditional “Christ-Hymn," the latter is the Greek idea that has relation with educational and religious models. In his advice for the Philippians, Paul interpreted these two concepts in the light of his own theological perspective. Especially he interpreted the ‘Christ's kenosis' not as “abstract, empty kenosis, but as “Christ's death on the Cross", that was a historical, concrete Act that could be imitated by one who wants to follow Jesus.
The Philippians should have imitated not only Paul but also Timothy and Epaphroditus. for they were all who had tried to imitate the Christ's Death on the Cross through their whole lives. This Imitation of Christ's Death on the Cross is the basic principle of paul's life which he wanted to teach the Philippians, and is now teaching us, too.
