The Working Group of International Chamber of Commerce provided the new Supplement to the Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits for Electronic Presentation or "eUCP". The completion of the UCP supplement for electronic presentation(eUCP), which was in foece as of April 1, 2002, brings the documentary credit into the electronic age. The eUCP has been written to allow UCP 500 and eUCP to work together. That is, the eUCP used in conjunction with the UCP provides definitions and the necessary rules for the presentation of the electronic equivalents paper documents or for a mixture of paper documents and electronic presentation under the letter of credit.
The purpose of this paper is to provide problems of and to enhance the understanding of eUCP by analyzing in detail the articles of the eUCP. Based upon the analysis, three points should be suggested. Firstly, it is the globalization of the eUCP in term of the format and contents. Secondly there must be a uniformly computerized system among countries for the practical use of the eUCP consistently and efficiently. Finally there should be multilateral agreements on the legal effects of main documents such as a Bill of Lading.
