AFTA reinforced the dynamism of the region and improved its competitive edge as an international production base, attracting foreign direct investment that has been the ASEAN's engine of growth. We have chosen to study the pattern of Southeast Asian manufactured goods IIT using the GL index for 1992 and 2002. A separate pattern of IIT between 1992 and 2002. It is clear that the share of IIT as a proportion of total manufactured trade has risen since 1980 for the Southeast Asian economy.
This paper examines ASEAN economic integration and its ability to promote intra-member trade in a new Asia Pacific economic environment. Toward this goal, we estimated a gravity model. This provided us with some insights into the characteristics of intra-ASEAN trade. Trade in ASEAN increases with the size of economy. However, as shown by the dummy variables, ASEAN integration scheme did not increase intra-ASEAN trade. In fact, increase in ASEAN countries trade occurred with members of a wider APEC group. The recent development of ASEAN FTA will have little economic impact since less than one-fifth of their trade is among themselves. ASEAN could generate a larger gain in trade by supporting unilateral and multilateral reduction in trade barriers among themselves and with other countries in the Asia pacific region.
Using a modified gravity equation, this paper investigates the effect of AFTA on world and regional trade patterns. Our first main finding is that trade flows were not significantly affected immediately following the signing of AFTA agreement in 1993. The degree of trade creation was lower than the proceeding period 1988-1992. One possible explanation for the fall in trade creation following 1993 was the emergence of credible competition for market share from the new industrial and exporting powers of China and Eastern Europe. Our another finding is that the Asian economic crisis was not a hindrance to the aims of AFTA but rather may have worked as a trigger for a acceleration of the economic integration. Recent development suggest that ASEAN continues to make efforts to accelerate institutional progress toward regional integration through both widening its membership to include the entire Southeast Asian region and pursuing wider integration possibilities beyond the region such as proposing economic cooperation with countries such as China, Japan and Korea(ASEAN+3).
