The insurance industry of Korea was faced with the big problem, which was the solvency context caused by nation's economic crisis. During the turbulence period, 1997-1998, the foreign insurers achieved the outstanding financial performances and market growth in volume and efficiency while the domestic ones got back in poor records.
With question about what makes the differences in domestic insurers and foreign ones, this study highlighted the strategic characteristics between them. For theoretically, this paper reviewed the existing strategic management theories through literature surveys and find out the five key factors for a quantitative analysis, such as mission & core competence, industry concentration, survuction system, intangible resources, and competitive strategies.
With 248 samples from the life insurers in Korea, the data were classified and proved empirically using the correlation and linear regression method so on. Major findings are that (1) making vision and mission toward customers, (2) developing core competences to focus on firm's ability, (3) customizing products and services on value and convenience of customers, (4) satisfying employees as a strategic edge, (5) formulating cooperate culture, and (6) choosing strategies in view of the firm I s purpose have a positive relation to its performances. This empirical study showed that foreign insurers were superior to domestic ones with conclusive evidences in a strategic perspective.
