China finally became an official member of the World Trade Organization(WTO) at the 4th WTO ministerial conference in November 2001. It has had tremendous impacts not only on the world Economy, but also on the Chinese economy. Especially, it will have strong impacts on the banking industry in China.
After China's entry to the WTO, the China's banking industry has been undergoing considerable changes as follows. First, liberalization has been occurring in the banking sector. Second, the speed of reforms in the banking sector is fine-tuned, thus leading to the slowdown in recovering the SOE's capital cost subsidies with low interest but no obligation to pay back. Third, foreign investment into China's banking sector is promoted. Fourth, interest rate liberalization is enforced. Fifth, new financial technologies and goods is rapidly introduced from advanced countries.
In conclusion, this study provides Korea's counter-measure to cope with changes in the China's banking sector after China's entry to the WTO. First, the Korean banks must consider taking investment into China and buying the stocks of Chinese banks. Second, they had better make strategic use of the Hong Kong banking institutions. Third, Korea should take possible efforts to induce the Chinese Banks to establish the branch offices in Korea.
