The purpose of this study is to empirically examine Korea's possibility of integration with subregional blocs in Northeast Asia region and to analyze functional economic integration and trade expansion effects of Northeast Asian Free Trade Agreement using the gravity model with yearly data of 1990 and from 1995 to 2000.
The empirical results show that the functional integration of Northeast Asian countries would have little economic influence. The two main reasons can be mentioned: asian financial crisis in late 1990s and the china's new membership of WTO, However, Northeast Asia region is the second largest and still growing market for Korea. Therefore, Korea should pursue the economic integration policy including capital liberalization and service market as a strategy to enhance the market share and to gain stable market for goods and resources in Northeast Asia area.
