The samurai class and upper peasants of Mito Han sometimes staged Nanjo(南上)Movement which means to go to Edo and perform protest activities for expressing their own political opinions through earlier 19th century. This is abnormal one when we think of the strict regulations on political activities, especially one in a group. What made Nanjo Movement as mass demonstraions be continued? I pointed out three factions, Sijuku(私塾, private school), Goko(鄕校, rural school) and Shashi(社祠, shrine of Shinto) as foothold of supporting Nanjo Movement.
Firstly, there were many Shijukus such as Toko(藤田東湖)'s Seiransha(靑藍舍) or Aizawa(會澤安)'s Nankaijuku(南街塾) at Mito catsle town and even rural area. The members of Sijuku used to discuss on political issues, adding to study on history or Confucianism. Through this process, they could gain personal trust and network one another.
Secondly, Mito Han was the first to establish Goko(鄕校) for educating mostly upper peasants and Shinkan(神官). The Fujita faction(藤田派) could require firm connection with them through educational process. In the turmoil of political confrontation, Goko was naturally turned into foothold supporting political activities especially Nanjo Movement, by the samuraies of middle and lower class and upper peasants. Finally, I want to refer to religional institutes such as Shashi(社祠) as the place of reinvigorating political activities. The participants of Nanio Movement used to hold their gathering at Shashi. Naturally the Shinkan(神官) group stepped deeply in the process of organizing and carrying out Nanio Movement.
It is said that the period of Bakumatsulshin(幕末維新期) was the age of political activities. For making clearer it. we have to have interest in explaining the foothold supporting such political activities.
