This study is about founding a distinctive feature of the Learning for the Ruler(帝王學) in the middle of the Choson dynasty. Especially the Learning for the Ruler had been under discussion in the Royal Lecture(經筵). The Royal Lecture which was being conducted on a plan to lessen royal authority practically has been a big impact on political situations. Therefore the function of gyeongyeon played a decisive role in the middle of the Chosun dynasty.
We can make an observation of several kinds of characteristics in gyeongyeon which had been under way from Gwanghaegun(光海君) to Hyeonjong(顯宗). Because of political intention, Gwanghaegun hardly participated in gyeongyeon. Injo(仁祖) and Hyojong(孝宗) frequently took part in gyeongyeon. In particular, Injo had much more of the Royal Lecture. In Hyoiong's reign the number of participation was not numerous though there were constant participation in it. Hyeonjong passed over the Royal Lecture many times and the number of participation was few.
Daehakyeonui(大學衍義) one of the Royal Lecture-Subjects that had been used as a textbook in the Royal Lecture was the center of attention. But the same time the opinions assuming critical attitudes toward this book was many. In those moments, Simgyeong(心經) was noticed. Simgyeong was firstly expounded from Hyojong, This book enjoyed the fullest confidence of sarim(士林). Quoting from this book sarim wanted to lead a king into the 'right' path that puts emphasis on simhak(心學). A typical precedent was Seonghak-sipdo(聖學十圖) of Yi Hwang(李滉) and Simdo(心圖) of Yi I(李珥).
As things turned out, the King had built up one's moral character and made efforts to engage men of ability. In accordance with this atmosphere, sanrim(山林) took deep root under Hyojong's reign. This means that the king acknowledged ministers as cooperators.
