The Busan Maritime Customs history exactly represents the early Korean Maritime Customs and shows the aspect of the modern opening of Korean port at the same time. If the foundation of Korean Maritime Customs had not have originated from Busan Dumojin Maritime Customs, how would the modern history of the Korea have come along?
Korean Customs System was organized by Mollendorff, a German, who had been served in China Maritime Customs. King Kojong invited him in December, 1882 in order to improve Korean political innovation recommended by the Viceroy Li Hung-chang in China. After that, about 100 customs office staffs were invited by Korean Government for establishment of Maritime Customs. They were actually managers and operators of Korean Maritime Customs for 22 years(l883-1905). But they are unknown to us yet how to work and contribute for Korea, excepting Moellendorff, 4 Chief Commissioners(now Director General of the Customs) and some commissioners(now Director General of the local Customs) stationed at the opening of a port in Korea at that time
On account of the lack of concepts of the customs, the practical management of Maritime Customs depended on the foreigner maritime customs officer engaged in China Maritime Customs, and consequently had a negative influence on a lot of parts of it.
In this research, the paper contained the management of Busan Maritime Customs and Maritime Customs House, and it requires much more research to director generals of Busan Maritime Customs House from now on.
The focus of the research is that Korean Maritime Customs including Busan Maritime Customs played a great role in the modern history of the opening of Korean port, and we make a significant contribution to make Korean Maritime Customs House or Korean Customs House clear. Therefore, we need to attract attention to the academic world to overcome our uppermost limit and make meaningful follow-up researches.
