This paper assesses the relationship between economic globalization, especially globalization in trade, and economic growth in developing countries. Two types of indicators were selected for evaluating the degree of national globalization in trade. First, Trade/GDP ratio in each country and its average growth rate throughout the period. Second, national Exports/GDP ratio in manufactures and its average growth rate. Data from the World Bank has been used to look for a possible relationship between variables, and the time period spans from 1971 to 2000. All the relative data were treated in an annual basis.
The results of the analysis are as follows. Economic growth rates were positively related to the levels of trade/GDP ratio, but not significantly. However, economic growth rates were significantly related with average growth rates in trade/GDP ratio, national exports/GDP ratio of manufactures, and its average growth rate. Based on the analysis, we can conclude that it is desirable for developing countries to expand international trade, especially the exports of manufactures during the rapid expansion of globalization.
Starting from 2000, the rate of globalization has been slowing down. It is noticeable that this result did not apply to the period with globalization slowdown.
