With the recent growth of the exhibition industry, city officials and economic development decision-makers are wrestling with the question of whether to develop new or expanded exhibition center assets in their communities. This study predicts the demand for exhibit space and estimates the time and size for additional exhibition center supply from 2004 to 2015. We use both time-series and regressive forecasts model and the data about the utilization rate of exhibit space and GDP from 1991 to 2003.
This study suggests that there will be a shortage of exhibition center supply for the central region of Korea from 2011(shortage: 12,602㎡), the southeastern region from 2011 (shortage: 3,649㎡), and the southwestern region from 2010(shortage: 895㎡). But the real shortage problem in the southeastern and southwestern region may occur in 2012 and 2013 respectively. However, it is hard to say this demand is required for trade shows that the government are focusing on. Space rental business of the exhibition center currently covers not only exhibitions but various kinds of events, such as concerts, wedding ceremony and themed events, and the utilization rate of exhibition center is also counted on this numbers. If the government wants to use this estimated result for applying to the exhibition center policy, it should be decided conservatively.
