In Renaissance Florentine society, the family was the basic unit and the blood tie was the most powerful cohesive agent. I Libri della Famiglia by Leon Battista Alberti, one of the leading intellectuals in Quattrocento Italy, attests to this crucial importance of the blood connection, the family, in Florence. Among several issues pertaining to family management discussed by him, in particular, marriage was one of major familial decisions or concerns. It involved the transfer of property and the realignment of social ranks; to put it another way, it often had political and economic implications.
By focusing on the institution of marriage which Alberti discussed, this study has two distinctive aims. First, it intends to illuminate how the work shows a contemporary interpretation of marriage in fifteenth-century Florence. For this purpose, it compares what Alberti depicted with the general consensus about Renaissance marriage mainly gleaned from social historical approaches. Second, beyond examination of the simple fact about Renaissance marriage mirrored in this work, the study seeks to investigate the cultural or ideological significance of Renaissance marriage pattern.
Throughout the article, I argue that Alberti's view on marriage reflects some distinctive contours of marriage during the Renaissance: the political connection between families; excessive amount of dowry; the young age at first marriage for women. In this regard, the work echoes Alberti's realistic perspective about society. Moreover, this study claims that not simply does the work display a contemporary view on marriage, but also it deliver to the readers a cultural meaning which ran underneath marriage as an institution. Simply put, it shows a male-centered, middle class world-view, which operated in the power-structured Florentine society.
