This article has tackled and clarified the themes of ‘Culture of Life’ and ‘Gender Equality’ issues and their interrelatedness. The Themes are much discussed and spread among people today, yet need to be further conceptually clarified and remodeled.
This article has shown how the themes have arisen and have been discussed in their Western contexts, and also discussed in Korea up to present time. The concepts of ‘Culture of Life’ or ‘Theology of Life’ remains ambiguous, as is criticised in general. Yet the themes are vitally related to environment movement, ecology, ecotheology, ecofeminist theology, since ‘Culture of Life’ movement today is vitally related to our life and concern for environmental or ecological issues. My main purpose in this article is to explore how ‘Culture of Life’ movement and ‘Gender Equality’ is to be correlated, for the sake of a further development of feminist theology. Having shown how the theme of ‘Culture of Life’ or ‘Theology of Life’ arose in Western historical contexts and its motives, I have discussed on the impact of ‘Culture of Life’ movement upon church and theology in Korea.
Also this article has tackled critically the ambiguity, conceptual and in relation to the capitalist world society today which has been devastating our ecological system and sustaining gender inequality. however Gender Equality movement and discourses in Korea are also ambiguous and need to be critically reviewed and clarified. And I have pointed out the general tendency of accepting and using the problematic concepts or terms and strategies of ‘gender mainstreaming’ and ‘affirmative action’. These streams are exposed to the criticism that feminist movement and theology would be a means for some middle class women to enter some privileged middle class men’s status. In spite of this critical problem, Gender Equality movement and policies have contributed much for women to obtain legal opportunity in their political and social status, though on the whole their gender equality need to be further promoted in social status.
Feminists and feminist theologians have been much struggling in face of male dominating societies, and against capitalist abusing of nature and devastating life environment, against male dominating political-economic world structures. Their peace movements against world military structures and nuclear threats. Those struggles of Feminist movement are nothing else than ‘Culture of Life’ movement. Those two factors need to be correlated, by the way of clarifying conceptually and in terms of policies.
This article has indicated the general limitations of ‘Culture of Life’ and ‘Gender Equality’ movements, both of which tend to remain within the male dominating capitalist world structures, for the sake of their continuing advancements of strategies toward better human life and egalitarian world community.
