This study sought to shed light on the prototype of ‘Bonche’(본채) of Namcheondaek in Haehoe Village, Andong, Korea by excavating and investigating the house and by making a comparative analysis of the outcome with various historical research data. First, Bonche was set against a high-rise site in the middle of the village where the ground was evenly covered and faced Mt.Nam(남산) in the front and Yeonbong(연봉) at the south, along with the existing Sadang(사당) and Daemunganche(대문간채)
Second, the size of Bonche was 8kan and a half in the front and 7kan and a half at the side, which made it 30kan in total including Toekan(퇴칸). The size indicates that the building was either middle or high level as Ddeuljip(뜰집) in Andong cultural area. The floor plan was organized thus: Anche, Sarangche, Hangrangche occupied the court; the roof and each 'Che(채)' is connected and forms a closed □-type; and only Sarangche was expanded by 2kan and a half to the right of Anche. In terms of region, class, and construction date, it fell into the category of complete-type and Hanggang expansion type. The arrangement and form of the floor plan shows that it is closely related to a middle or upper-class house built in Andon region (Pungcheon-meyon, Pungsan-eyp) in the late Choson among Ddeuljips in Andong culture area. Furthermore, it seems to reflect the universal and normative spatial arrangement system of the Andong and Bonghwa regions in Andong Cultural area that was founded on the Confucius lifestyle and social norms. Third, 'Ches' were arranged with Anche, Sarangche and Hangrangche. placing the inner door of Hangrangche on the front, Anche and Sarangche were combined in ㄱ+⊥ types and Sarangbang was located in the diagonal direction from Anbang. Also, due to the floor plan where each che shares the court, it had various physical facilities for terrestrial, eye-contact and alerting compartments. It was estimated that the spatial arrange of Anche is so-called Yeongnam-type Ddeuljip widely distributed in Ddeuljips in Andong and Bonghwa regions and the size type is concentration type, to be restored accordingly. The floor type and size of Sarangche falls into the category of typical Completion and Hanggang expansion type of Andong region in Ddeuljips in Andong cultural area. In particular, Gongrumaru beside Daecheongmaru is an exceptional case in Ddeuljip, revealing its regional and temporal characteristics as it is similar to Byeoldangche of Bukcheondeak in the village. Behind Sarangbang and small Sarang, there were Golbang and Tteotmaru so as to sophisticatedly offer dual structure to block eyes from Anche and to achieve human traffic connection. Hangrangche was placed between Anche and Sarangche. It is speculated that the entry method of Anche was modified from the original Jeonyip type/straightline type into the Jeonyip type/curved type.
