Dolsanjin(Dolsan garrison) was a marine outpost in the eastern area of South Jeolla Province in the Joseon Dynasty period, which was created about the third year of King Taejo's reign (1394) and was abolished because of the reorganization of the military system during the Gabo Reform (Gabo gaeongjang, 1895). It is because of the island evacuating policy caused by the frequent invasions of Japanese pirates that Dolsanjin was located in Yeosu peninsula rather than Dolsan island. Dolsan-hyeon was moved from the island to the peninsula, suitable for the defense, so that a naval garrison which was called Dolsan could stand there.
In the early years of the Joseon Dynasty, Dolsanjin was a naval garrison under the command of manho(commander of ten thousand), the junior grade of the fourth official rank. While Bangdabjin (Bangdab garrison) was established, Dolsanjin was downgraded to the post of gweongwan, the junior grade of the ninth official rank, Moreover, its position also shifted from the naval forces to the land forces, As it was reorganized into a somojin (recruitable garrison) under the command of byeoljang, the junior grade of the ninth official rank in the third year of King Gwanghaegun's reign (1611), Dolsanjin turned back to the naval forces. At the same time, its official name was altered into Godolsanjin (Old Dolsan garrison).
Godolsanjin belonged to Sadojingwan (Sado defense system) under the control of Jeolla Jwasuyoung, Its commanding officer byeoljang did not have the right of mobilization of soldiers, and had to recruit new soldiers because of the deficiency of assigned naval forces. It was the lowest somojin. The number of its warships and of its linen and cotton for wage were, however, equated with those of manhojin (garrison under the command of manho), Godolsanjin's byeoljangs ranked with manhos in the training and war footing. In addition to military affairs, they took charge of administrative ones such as tax collection. That was a burden that the smallest naval garrison hardly cope with.
