This paper analyzes the effects of the Korea-US FTA on macro economies and various industries in Gyeonggiprovince by presenting a CGE model. For the effects on the macro economies, we mainly focus on the impacts on GRDP, social welfare, exportation and importation, trade balance, FDI, and employment in Gyeonggi-province. For the effects on the industries, we primarily concern the impacts on manufacturing industries, agricultural industries, and services in the area.
The effects of the Korea-US FTA on macro economies such as GRDP, social welfare, exportation and importation, trade balance, FDI, and employment are summarized as follows. First, the GRDP of Gyeonggi-province is increased by 0.71 percent. Second, the social welfare of the area is increased cumulatively for 10 years by $4,590 million, and increased by an average of $460 million per year. Third, the surplus of average annual trade-balance is $450 million for the world and the surplus of average annual trade-balance is $110 million for the US. Fourth, the inward FDI is $3-4 million on the average per year. Finally, total number of jobs of all over industries in Gyeonggi-province is increased by 6,400 workers on the average per year: the employment of agricultural industries goes down a little; meanwhile, that of manufacturing industries and services goes up.
The effects of the Korea-US FTA on the industries in Gyeonggi-province as follows. The effects are divided into two ways: positive and negative effects. The FTA takes good effects on automobile, textile, and electronics industries. On the other hand, it is expected that the FTA takes negative effects on medicine, agricultural, and services industries.
In conclusion, it is necessary that we increase productivities to promote the effects of the FTA on the industries in Gyeonggi-province as well as all over Korea. To do so, we argue that the industrial structure in Gyeonggiprovince is to be moved from low-tech industries to hightech industries. In addition, The government is to forge ahead with the job of deregulating the economy in Korea.
