Observing the data from 51 traffic counters in the capital region and traffic data of the major points in Seoul show that the level of traffic congestion on Saturday is the highest. When the 5-day work week is officially carried out at national level, travel characteristics on Saturday would be radically changed.
When the 5-day work week is implemented, out door activities will be greatly increased with the increase of leisure time. This will cause a heavier level of traffic congestion and an increase of long distance road-using trips at weekend.
In this article, “Gyonggi-Do household weekend travel survey”is used in order to analyze activity participation and travel behavior for the people who go to work on Saturday(workers) and those who do not go to work(non-workers).
Sound analysis of weekend activity participation and travel behavior on the weekends, which is quite different from weekdays, will suggest effective policies to cope with the future rapid increase of demand for weekend travel, which will be derived from the 5-day work week and also from increasing income.
