This article reviewed past history of the Korean-Mongol relation and recent transactions between the two nations. And it also tried to make suggestions for enhancing cooperative ties in the future.
Geographically, Mongol is not a small country. Its population, however, is very small. On the other hand, Mongol has large deposits of coal, cooper, and molybdenum. Oil is another hope. From the Korean point of view, Mongol is not the vital country in its diplomatic relations arena. But its abundant mineral resources and geopolitical position is never regarded as a trivialness.
Korea has been imported most of all energy resources. If Korea is concern about natural resources in the Siberia and east Asian economic & energy cooperation, Mongol is an important country. Moreover, if Korea wants to have diplomatic flexibility between China and USA, principal rivalry in the 21st century, the diplomatic value of the Central Asia is never underestimated.
In the past fifteen years, the New Mongol has successfully transformed its socialist planned economy into a free-market economy. So now is the appropriate time to launch comprehensive efforts by both government officials and civilian experts of the two countries to study and make recommendations on the shape of the future relationship.
