Increasingly attention has been addressed towards social entrepreneurship from a variety of domains: business strategy, entrepreneurship, public sector management, community development and not-forprofit marketing. Researchers have been drawn to an interesting phenomenon. As I have identified, the research area has suffered from a lack of a unified and coherent framework capturing the unique environment and organizational characteristics of social entrepreneurship.
I offer the findings of this study, the bounded integrated model of social entrepreneurship, as a contribution enabling future researchers to develop a programmed body of research in the field.
The findings suggest that social entrepreneurship can be conceptualized as a multi-dimensional construct with innovativeness, proactiveness and risk management as its dimensions. A construct is referred to as multidimensional when it consists of a number of interrelated attributes and dimensions and exists in multidimensional domains.
Therefore social entrepreneurship can be viewed as an overall abstraction of innovativeness, proactiveness and risk management within the constraints of environment, opportunity seeking/recognition, sustainability and social mission. The emerging model is a parsimonious one that captures the behavioral characteristics of the social enterprise within the broad environmental and operational constraints.
In identifying social entrepreneurship as a constrained optimization problem I have clearly distinguished it from for-profit entrepreneurship and identified its unique form. I have provided a clear framework and a new lens to view the phenomenon and to guide future research. However, I identify that the model needs to be further refined and tested empirically using cross sector and samples.
