This article aims to analyze the characteristic features of gender order and hegemonic masculinity in post- Soviet Russia in the context of the ongoing globalization trends and the new gender reality faced by post-Soviet Russia.
The current globalization process, particularly its neoliberal form is mainly accompanied by the appearance of ‘global hegemonic masculinity’ ? so called ‘transnational business masculinity’. It should be noted that the phenomenon of globalization is also associated with the emergence of the reactionary masculinity movements or anti-hegemonic masculinity movements around the world.
With the introduction of market economy system, gender order in post-Soviet Russia could be characterized primarily by its increasing commercialism. At the same time gender order in the new Russian society is permeated with the influence of past Soviet and old traditional gender values and consciousness.
Under the conditions of these global trends and Russian gender order, hegemonic masculinity in post-Soviet Russia could be represented by ‘careerist masculinity’ model. Although this type of hegemonic masculinity has a lot of new contents and characteristics, its core is still comprised of a strong orientation towards the acquirement, maintenance and reinforcement of the male dominance in the society.
