Forest loss and fragmentation are widely recognized as the two most important factors responsible for the degradation of biological diversity worldwide. The same case is applied to the Uluguru Mountain forests where extensive forest loss and fragmentation has occurred due to human disturbances and fire consequently leading to biodiversity degradation. Many considerations and efforts on the possible conservation measures needed to curb the current biodiversity catastrophes have not yielded the desired results. This study was conducted to examine the role of socio-economic incentives in biodiversity conservation. Data were collected through PRA and socio-economic surveys. Content and structural-functional analyses were used to analyze qualitative data. SPSS software tools were used to analyze quantitative data. Multiple regression models were used to explore the effects of socio-economic incentives in biodiversity conservation. The study found that 83.2% of respondents depended on farming. Availability of extension services, access to market and storage facilities and access to loans were the most effective socio-economic incentives. The coefficient of determination (R²=0.73 and 0.71) of independent variables explained about 73% and 71% of variation in the number of planted and retained trees respectively. Crop damage by vermin and shortage of land were the socio-economic disincentives hindering biodiversity conservation. The paper concludes that socio-economic incentives contribute to sustainable biodiversity conservation. It is recommended that incentive package structure should be improved and deliberate measures be designed to eliminate disincentives. Furthermore, the gazettement of some of the general forest lands that house important plant and animal species is necessary.
