Hangang Jeong-gu(寒岡鄭逑) is a famous Confucian classic scholar in middle periods of Choseon dynasty. He showed us a lots of achievements in studying propriety(禮學) and studying Confucian psychology(心學), writing regional documents(地方誌). So he was respected by almost all of Confucian classic scholars at his time ending up his occupying important level as a famous Confucian classic scholar. Because his small volume of poetry is taken as very important achievement in his time.
This paper is written in order to research characteristics of Hangang(寒岡)'s condolatory poetry. We can understand characteristics of Hangang(寒岡)'s whole poetry by researching characteristics of Hangang (寒岡)'s condolatory poetry. I found out three kinds of characteristics of Hangang(寒岡)'s condolatory poetry.
Firstly, Hangang(寒岡)'s condolatory poetry was descriptive when introducing a personal story: a poetic objective person's life, the relationship between poetic objective person and poetic persona. Hangang(寒岡) described the relationship between poetic objective person and poetic persona in time oder mainly.
Secondly, Hangang(寒岡)'s condolatory poetry was objective when public admiring poetic objective person's several big achievements: those are poetic objective person's virtues, acting in politic stage and home town, studies. Those achievements are based on Confucianism very much.
Thirdly, Hangang(寒岡)'s condolatory poetry was lyrical when expressing poetic persona's personal and public emotion of condolence. There are four kinds of direct reason which cause the poetic persona's emotion of condolence. The first one is to be bereaved of his friends and his teachers, his students. The second one is a poetic objective person's an early grave making others mournful a lot. The third one is that he does not have a chance to learn a lesson from his teacher any more. Conclusively Hangang(寒岡)'s condolatory poetry is objective lyric poem because of three kinds of characteristics of Hangang(寒岡)'s condolatory poetry: descriptive, objective, lyrical.
