In the early twentieth century, Shanghai was very prosperpus. There, Wang Yiting (Wang Zhen, zi yiting, bao Meibua Guanzbu, Haiyun Louzhu and Bailong Shanren) was at the forefront of the commercial, political, religious and charitable fields, in which he achieved gigantic accomplishments. Benefiting from his extremely high reputation and solid financial position as well as his inborn talents and deep affection for art, Wang became an all-powerful figure in me art circle in Shanghai.
Wang started his commercial career from a young age and reached his peak in his fifties. His influence in the commercial field continued till his death. Although he was not directly involved in political movements after 1913, Wang still enjoyed his high political status in Shanghai for the rest of his life. Similarly, he consistently promoted and participated in charities. His contributions to the society were countless. Moreover, apart from making greet efforts to support art education and individual artists, Wang was also an important initiator or member of over twenty 31t association and led the evolution of different functional alt associations. These, of course, were very substantial tor me outgrowth of the Shanghai art field.
Wang's interest in art was consistent. He built up his interest in 31t when he was very young and advanced it throughout his life. The subject matters of his paintings were very broad. The style of his figure paintings was so crucial that it affected and enriched mat of the Shanghai Painting School. This revealed not only me fashion of figure paintings of his contemporaries, but also led to a new trend which acutely inspired me generation of younger artists.
As a distinguished patron, leader and artist, Wang Yiting bestowed significant contributions to me development of art in Shanghai.
