A story about Jieun and her mother is written in Samkuksagi and Samkukyusa. This story tells us about Jieun who looked after her own mother so well, got rewarded for her goodness. But the story also shows many social and political aspects of the Sillian society at the time through mentioning the reactions of Queen Jinsung and Hwarang Hyojong as well as his followers(Nangdo) to Jieun's story, Hyojong's marriage to a daughter of King Hungang, and Hwarangdo's excursions to Posukjung. Overall, this story can be a significant record on the high and low classes of Kungju, the capital of Silla.
One of the most interesting things about Jieun's story is laid on the fact that the charity was started by Hyojong, but eventually taken up by his parents as well as the followers, and the Queen herself. Moreover, the whole event subsequently led Hyojong to get married to a princess. Therefore, this story goes beyond a story about the rich helping the poor. However, here we are faced with a problem of how to interpret this story.
I thus analyse the story as a way to understand the political situation during the reign of Queen Jinsung. I also attempt to explain the real rea-sons for the excursions to Posukjong, which eventually led Nangdo to take part in helping Jieun. The conclusion drawn from this analysis is that the excursions were not for a mere entertainment, but designed to harness their group spirit, urgently needed in front of national crises, such as bandits' anti-dynastic activities. The Queen's reaction to Jieun story also aimed to rid of criticisms among the people of Kungju towards the monarchy. Jieun story also tells us the fact that Hwarangdo was a political group that was closely connected to the Monarchy. The story about Hyojong and his marriage to a princess assures us of their relations.
On the surface the story is about Jieun but in a real sense informs us the political situation during the late Silla period.
