The Book of Zhuangzi is one of the Chinese philosophical classics. It has been inspiring and influencing the culture, art and literature ever after. This study explores the influence of the space propagation of classics on the evolution of literature by taking the reception and transformation of fish images in The Book of Zhuangzi applied in Taiwan modern poetry as examples. Space here can refer to both geographical space and literary space; from The Book of Zhuangzi to Taiwan modern poetry, the differences of space provides more room for imagination so the simple fish images are transformed into the projections of the poets’ self-images and the metaphors of hard times. The projections are personal life significance while hard times represent the common memory of people. The metaphors of fish images that are received, transformed, developed and constructed in Taiwan modern poetry not only inherit the philosophies of Zhuangzi but also enrich the content of the modern poetry in Taiwan, showing the literary cultivation and creative genius of the modern poets. The fish images in The Book of Zhuangzi are archetypically significant and literarily influential as well.
