This essay examined the historical process of the making image of ‘Yu Kawn-Soon(유관순)’, the emblem of March 1st Independence movement.
In the colonial period records on Yu Kawn-Soon was very few and shortly after liberation Yu Kawn-Soon became unpopular as press told that few people knew her. However in 1950’s Yu Kawn-Soon rapidly gained the popularity as Korean Elites sought to take moral authority by using the image of her.
Rapidly spreading her to Korean people is why the persons who intended to let them know her called her by mass-intimate method. Yu Kawn-Soon was often called ‘Jeanne d’Arc of Chosun(朝鮮)’ and compared to her. Throughout the colonial period ‘Jeanne d'Arc was quite known among Koreans and the popularity of Yu Kawn-Soon was constructed by this comparison.
After liberation the commemoration on Yu Kawn-Soon was on the road, and Yu Kawn-Soon Commemoration Association(유관순기념사업회) was organized. The people related to ‘Ewha(梨花)’, such as Park In-duk(박인덕) and Shin Bong-jo(신봉조), took important role by participating in creation of the association and celebrities of politic and academic world. This body practiced not only producing a molding such as building a memorial, but also publishing a biography and producing a movie, which needed professional knowledge, skill and much fund, and which had much effect on people. That was developed by Christians such as Jun Young-taek(전영택) and Yun Bong-choon (윤봉춘), and Yu Kawn-Soon’s life and anti-Japanese struggle described by them was deeply colored by Christianity.
After Korean-War, Yu Kawn Soon’s achievement was to enter the elemetry school. There he free himself from christianity.
Particularly, the spirit of March 1st Independence Movement connects with the same country’s ideology such as patriotism, establishment of the country and Anti-community.
It gives a special place as a salvation hero to Yu Kawn-Soon by taking care of religious independence using teaching materials for educational purpose.
