In this article I investigated the diglossia phenomena in Hyangga(향가), chinese poetry(한시), chinese classic novel(한문소설), korean classic novel(한글소설), Gasa(가사), Sijo(시조), Yadam(야담), anecdote(일화), and joke.
Hyangga was created through recitation. To record the recited works of Hyangga, people of Silla dynasty devised Hyangchal. Hyangchal made it possible to record every syllables of the works of Hyangga. Hyangga written by Hyangchal and chinese poetry written by chinese characters proves that the diglossia existed in the Silla dynasty.
I also argue that the diglossia existed in the writings of Sadaebu. Sadaebu were able to use chinese characters easily and comfortably. So they wrote chinese poetry to express their own emotion. But they also wrote Gasa and Sijo in korean. Jeongcheol and Lee Whang were representative writers. The reason why they wrote Gasa and Sijo was not simple. First of all, they wrote them for the purpose of better communication between the writers and their low class readers. Korean language was the only media which enabled that kind of communication. So sadaebu had to choose the korean language genre, Gasa and Sijo.
Sadaebu also created the chinese classic novel. For the low class people and women who could not read it, the chinese classic novel had to be translated into korean. There were two ways of reading the korean classic novel. First, reading alone without making any sound. Second, a reciter reads loudly and interestingly, the audience listen to it and respond. In Chosun dynasty, the latter was dominant circumstance.
In the case of Yadam, the integration between speaking, listening, hearing and writing occurred. To explain the diglossia in korean classic literature, we will have to focus on the case of Yadam and korean classic novel.
In the cases of anecdote and joke, the diglossia was used to explore artistic possibilities of works.
