This paper attempts to discuss the causes of variation in the conceptual metaphor of [LIFE] in English and Korean by examining the metaphorical expressions related to life in English and Korean.
To sum up, firstly, the common metaphors used to conceptualize the target domain of LIFE in English and Korean are [LIFE IS A PRECIOUS THING] and [LIFE IS A JOURNEY]. Secondly, the preferential metaphors used to conceptualize the target domain of LIFE in Korean are [LIFE IS A PLAY/DRAMA], [LIFE IS A WAR] and [LIFE IS A LABYRINTH], while those in English are [LIFE IS A GAME], [LIFE IS A GAMBLE] and [LIFE IS A COMPROMISE]. Thirdly, the cause of variation in the conceptual metaphor related to life in English and Korean can be differential experience and differential viewpoint preference. In other words, many of the conceptual metaphors vary not only because our experiences as human beings also vary, but because the viewpoint preference we put to use for the creation of abstract thought also vary. For example, Americans primarily use the [LIFE IS A COMPROMISE] metaphors for understanding the concept of life in general, whereas Koreans predominantly employ the [LIFE IS A WAR] metaphors. This means that the differences in the use of metaphors related to life obviously has to do with their differential experience in their history.
As another instance, Americans primarily use the metaphorical expressions that belong to the [LIFE IS A GAME] metaphor while Korean mostly employ the [LIFE IS A LABYRINTH] metaphors. This shows that the metaphorical systems that cultures produce will in general be coherent with certain viewpoint preference.
