The effects of blossom thinners applied after self-incompatibility control substance (SICS) treatment on fruit set and quality of ‘Fuji’ apple were investigated. Four blossom thinners [trisodium phosphate dodecahydrate (SP, Na₃PO₄ㆍ12H₂O), sodium sulfate (SS, Na₂SO₄), calcium acetate [CA, Ca(CH₂-COO)₂], and calcium nitrate [CN, Ca(NO₂)₂] were tested when applied 4 days after SICS treatment at 10 or 20 ㎎ㆍL?¹. CN and SS were re-evaluated when applied at 10 or 20 ㎎ㆍL?¹, once (3 or 4 days after SICS treatment) or twice (3 and 5 days or 4 and 6 days after SICS treatment). Thinning efficacies of CN and SS were compared with that of a Japanese blossom thinner Ekoruki (52 and 123 ㎎ㆍL?¹ Ca and Na, respectively). In all experiments, untreated control was included, receiving SICS treatment 4 days before full bloom. CN and SS were more effective in double applications: first at 3 days after SICS and 1 day before full bloom, and second at 5 days after SICS and 1 day after full bloom. CN had approximately 50% higher thinning efficacy than SS, especially in double applications (3 and 5 days after SICS treatment) at 20 ㎎ㆍL?¹. At 10 ㎎ㆍL?¹, only SS in double applications (3 and 5 days after SICS treatment) had higher thinning efficacy than Ekoruki. SICS improved fruit set, but blossom thinners reduced fruit set compared with SICS only.
