As is well-known that the spirit of carnival in the novels of Rabelais expresses popular human psychology which plot against the medieval social value system, that of Dostoevsky’s novel The Devils turns out to be a sort of driving force sprouting a great deal of evil wide-spreading in the 19<SUP>th</SUP> century Russia. The author elaborates to achieve such purpose a narrative plan of dissolving the evil ideology by the devils in the novel. That is to say, what the author attempts to reveal is falling down the prestige of the devils such as Peter Verkhovensky comparing them with actors of the medieval mystery play.
As carnival is a kind of time festival, which extinguishes and regenerates everything in it, The Devils carefully shows keeping the plotline of such activity by the medium of the fire and the pilgrimage of Stephen Verkhovensky. While the fire, which plays in usual the last part of carnival, burns down the worth of the devils, the pilgrimage represents the returning to life. The main body of carnival, which is the crowning and de-crowning, presents and marks the climax in the novel when Peter declares Stavrogin as “Prince Ivan” and the holy fool Lebiadkina reveals the secret of her husband calling “devil”.
The sites where Peter is at his secret work and the pond where the dead body of Shatov is fallen to the bottom symbolize as the inferno in the stage of mystery play. These are the places where Peter is in full activity and, therefore, have far-reaching influence on the people of the society.
