Whitman uses more rewritable and malleable text than inclusive and elusive words as shown in his manuscript of “Song of the Universal” because of self-consuming artifact through the poetic malleability in his poetry. Also, Whitman's “Song of Myself,” “I am he that aches with amorous love,” and “The Sleepers” evince two poetic movements: a sense of inclusiveness and elusiveness. He unites these two poetic stances to extend his malleable text by using interaction of inclusive reality and elusive imagination. As for his idea of inclusiveness, he adopts democratic imagery that incorporated elements of everyday life as experienced by the common person. He includes all time, space, and matters by using malleable words. Whitman continues this malleable movement by moving endlessly within the endless ambit of reality itself.
Whitman's trope is also an elusive motion that seeks to continuously pass beyond all that defines its self, even the emblematic gesture of inclusion. Especially he uses elusive imagination to include and integrate everything in universe. Whitman bears a subtle yet undeniable inclination to elude the all-consuming unity of his democratic ethos. Whitman's surprising reading of death will bring us farther in our search for Whitman's trope of “passing.”
The elusive element cannot exist in its truest form without the gesture of inclusion toward the universe. These two poetic features of Whitman interact each other because they depend on each other in his poetic malleability. Whitman is thus the supreme poet who influences American poetry because he conceives of poetry as the action of interactive malleability. Whitman cannot cease or even be passed because he is perpetually passing beyond his time. Therefore, understanding American poetry requires understanding Whitman's inclusive and elusive movements through his malleable poetic text.
