The tree metaphor, which is most consistently employed throughout Leaves of Grass, is the vehicle through which Whitman expresses his major themes. This paper attempts to view three aspects of Whitman’s tree metaphor. First, Whitman finds the artistic quality in trees, and he bestows his poems with the characteristics of trees, rendering his poems with the qualities of trees. Second, Whitman views trees as major resources to build the foundations of the New World. The red-wood tree, which is often identified with Indians, is depicted as voluntary victims for “the superber race.” Whitman’s anti-ecological attitude is discussed concerning this matter. Third, Whitman’s sense of unity is discussed through the tree metaphor. Whitman depicts the New World and himself as a tree with lots of foliage which are interconnected.
