The aim of this study is to examine the semantic case that is an essential concept in Case Grammar. First of all, adverbials in English can be identified as prepositional phrases and can be assigned the semantic case. Next, the truth condition proves that the semantic case plays an important role in showing synonymy between the sentences. Moreover, ‘ha’ in Japanese is different from other case particles in that it functions as “theme” in the sentence and therefore, should be treated as a different functional level from case particles. Finally, other sets of semantic case that are assigned to Japanese also show that the common semantic case universally exist in languages.
