『Sarumino』, edited by Bashou's disciples, Kyorai and Bonchou, under Bashou's rigorous guidance in 1691, was highly appraised as Shoumon's representative collection of poems. At that time Shoumon was a leading group among haiku writers. The reason might be that the poetical ideal of Bashou, the leader of Shoumon, was wholly reflected in 『Sarumino』.
As the study of『Sarumino』so far has been focused to individual poems, there is no finding any attempt to view the collection of poems itself as a work. But a kind of sequence and common theme can be found among individual poems when we read them closely. That is deeply related with the editorial intention of Bashou and his disciples, therefore to clarify the structure of arrangement in the collection would be essential to understand 『Sarumino』.
This paper will examine the arrangement structure based upon accumulated study so far, revealing the editorial intention underlying that structure. That would be a new attempt to see the collection as a creative work.
