A new type of truss core for sandwich panels, named zigzag truss was introduced. It was designed to provide a core which can be easily manufactured using bent wires, and to allow design flexibility by simply changing interval between wires. To prove the merit of zigzag truss core, a design optimization of sandwich panel with zigzag truss core was attempted using failure mechanism maps. Design variables were face sheet thickness, core height, wire thickness and additionally interval between wires. A routine for an optimization was developed and used for demonstration. As a base case, a truss of which intervals between wires are same as the strut length was taken and its optimum condition was found first. Then maintaining the total weight as same as of the base case, interval was adjusted, that was, number of wires in the core was increased investigating changes in failure modes and the peak load. It was found that as the interval decreases, the location of the peak load moves from the confluence of face buckling, face yielding and core yielding to the failure zone of face yielding, indentation yielding and core yielding with the peak load increased. The results have been shown that zigzag core has a high potential as a truss core for sandwich panels.
