This paper examined the dramatization aspect and the meaning of classic novels with the subject of 〈Hong GilDongJeon〉ㆍ〈Janghwa Hong ryeonJeon〉 appeared in phonograph records containing classic novels.
The aspect that those are converted from a novel into a drama and contained in the record was viewed after dividing it into two kinds. First, the conversion from a narrative genre to a drama genre appeared with the accompany of change to an audio medium. Therefore, the dramatic tension and the live quality were strengthened. Also, it showed an aspect that a specific part is selectively contained in stead of recording the whole book. The selected part is a home-leaving scene of 'Gil-Dong' and a part that 'Janghwa' is separated from 'Hongryeon', so those show a common feature called 'a sad scene'. Second, all the two novels have removed unrealistic elements such as Taoist magic use and rebirth talks, etc. Also, the change of a character type was being shown. 'Gil-Dong' in the novel is a Confucian ideal type and showed heroic looks. But 'Gil- Dong' in the drama is not a Confucian figure but an usual human type that we can see in the neighborhood.
Thus, the following two kinds of meanings were deduced from the dramatization aspect of the novels. First, its sentimentality was maximized by stressing a sad story and thus this means that it stimulates emotions of the public. Second, it is leading the 'modern' public to be able to sympathize by removing unrealistic elements and showing an usual character type. These meanings are converged to a fact that these works all aim a public show.
