According to Lacan, language is not a tool of thinking. It function by autonomous and indepentdent mechanism. Lacan insist that an author's writing and a reader's reading of text are the same action which acte on through the medium of texts in a structure of inter-subjectivity. The aim of this article is to show the Lacan's originality and his point of view about the literature by mean of Lacan's reading of 'Hamlet' and 'The purloined letter'.
Lacan explain his theory of the signified and status of literate text through the instrumentality of Poe's short tale 'The purloined letter'. It is the letter itself in Poe's tale that decide caracters and each role and plot event. The letter whose content is not known is symbole of signified, because it divide the three gaze and had interact. The same logic is so for 'Hamlet'. Hamlet is the typical hero who submit to the Other mother's desire. Therfore he cannot know his desire.
