This study focuses on how immigrants in Korea are represented in narratives of TV news based on the content analysis of 119 stories from KBS, MBC, SBS and YTN, broadcast between 2000∼2008. The results reveal that approximately eighty percent of the news topics revolved on two major issues: hardships and frustrations in the lives of immigrants and immigrants being protected by Koreans. The narrative structure portrays the immigrants’ lives as becoming more tragic rather than more hopeful. This research shows that television news represents the lives of others measured by Korean standards, including stereotyping and paternalism. TV news depicts immigrants as “the other”: for example, most Koreans are portrayed as professionals working hard in formal attire while only a few immigrants are described as productive. TV news also represents immigrants as negative stereotypes who are reported to be unhealthy, with psychological anxiety problems, and living in a state of poverty. TV news gives greater news value to married migrant women than to migrant laborers. In addition, paternalism in TV news is revealed by stories that show Koreans helping and caring for immigrants while immigrants are portrayed as victims.
