The main purpose of this article is to develop a theory which can explain the unification of the Korean peninsular from a Korean perspective. The existing unification theories have a great difficulty in explaining it and enlarging the interests of the Koreans. Therefore, it is strongly required more than anything else to develop a 'Korean' unification theory in accordance with Korean environments and interests.
In geopolitics, the Korean peninsular is surrounded by neighboring great powers such as the U.S.A., China, Japan, and Russia. This geopolitical location of Korea has so strongly constrained her political and diplomatic autonomy that the unification of two divided Koreas could never be free from the influences of neighbor powers', especially under the regional bipolar system. In these circumstances, the main variables that determine the unification of Korean peninsular are 'the degree of which bloc a united Korea stands with' and 'the degree of collaboration among domestic and foreign political actors in the unification process.' These two variables mixed, there could be put out five ideal types of unification forms or lines as shown in 〈diagram 1〉. In case of Korean society, the Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ-1 types have existed for a long time and on a large scale as shown in 〈diagram 2〉. Under the regional bipolar system, the Ⅴ-type is the most realistic and reasonable in order to achieve the unification.
From this point of view, neither the absorption unification alternative as seen in Germany nor the independent unification alternative without any supports from neighboring powers nowadays prevailing in Korean society will give a boost to Korean unification. Under the regional bipolar system, both divided Korean regimes should strongly pursue the Ⅴ-type and actively ask for the supports of neighboring great powers, especially bloc hegemonial powers such as the U.S.A. and China.
