In this paper we have discussed the analyses of A+I (Accusative Plus Infinitive) construction in English, which believe-type verbs take, such as early STOR (Subject To Object Raising) analysis, ECM (Exceptional Case Marking) analysis, recent and revised STOR analysis. And we have investigated the evidences for STOR analysis and ECM analysis. After that we have discussed the categorial status of the complement clauses which believe-type verbs take. This paper can be summarized and concluded as follows:
The study of A+I construction has a long history. The first-type of analysis for this construction was STOR analysis, after that, ECM analysis appeared, and then revised STOR analysis appeared. With the decoupling of underlying semantic positions and surface functional case positions being explored in recent minimalist versions of transformational grammar, the need for the ECM approach has declined and the revised STOR analysis is the only one consistent with new architecture of the theory.
In conclusion, all the types of analysis for A+I construction has each their own advantages, but it seems that STOR analysis, especially revised STOR analysis is better than ECM analysis. And it seems to be desirable that studies on A+I construction should be approached from both syntactic and semantic point of view since the NP after the main verb in A+I construction in English is the direct object from the syntactic viewpoint, and it is the subject of the embedded clause from semantic viewpoint. But a further study is needed.
